Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts

Established by Congress, the 14th Amendment promised citizenship in exchange for enlistment, prompting many African American men. They were denied due to Jim Crow laws but still served. The film examines the profound and often-contradictory roles played by Buffalo Soldiers in U.S. history, and how they fought on two sets of front lines: military conflicts abroad and civil rights struggles at home.

Service members and their families demonstrate their character and resolve in the most trying of circumstances. As a case manager working with refugees, former military Kevin challenges his assumptions about others; after penpalling her brother’s Navy buddies, Juli-anne understands the impact of her letters; and James tries to connect with his brother killed in the Vietnam War.

Veterans

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day marked the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. The name of the holiday was changed decades later to honor all veterans from WWII to the Korean War. These brave men and women return home today with many challenges – physical, mental and societal. In November, WORLD aims to bring attention to generations of veterans as they learn to cope, love and live as civilians again.
