No Country for the Poor

Season 04  Episode 7

What happens if a democracy fails its citizens by not serving everyone equally? And what if inequality becomes the norm where the most vulnerable citizens are left behind with no money, home, rights...and no country of their own?

The government in Hungary has slashed social benefits and criminalized homelessness. To defend their right to be citizens and to fight for social justice, homeless and middle class activists are confronting the authorities. The group, who lost two of its founding members to tragic deaths, believes the country is growing more hostile and that their struggle is paramount. Despite these odds, what keeps the activists going are their own community: an island of hope with democracy and solidarity at its heart, with belonging and dignity gradually shifting the other way in society.
