Gilda Brasileiro: Against Oblivion

Gilda Brasileiro, the daughter of a Jewish woman and Afro-Brazilian man, discovers documents about an illegal slave-trading point in the Brazilian rainforest. While none of the locals want to remember the past, she finds it unacceptable as the documents indicate that despite the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1831, hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans continued to be taken to Brazil. Determined and unswayed, Gilda begins a quest for the memory of slavery in the world’s largest coffee-growing region in the 19th century.
