Stories from Lakka Beach

About This Episode

Lakka, a picturesque beach village in post-conflict Sierra Leone, developed into the epicenter of West African tourism. Ravaged by civil war, Lakka Beach’s tourist industry came to a standstill. But village life continues.

In Stories from Lakka Beach, the voice of five villagers - including a fisherman, a carver, a restaurant owner, a local politician and an aspiring rapper - reveal deep and profound moments of their lives, and a different side of the war-torn community. They tell stories about the ocean and the land; about war, love, hope and religion; and how tourism on the white heavenly beaches is nothing compared to what it was in the 1980s. Visitors stay away because of the recent war, a painful memory that the inhabitants are trying to forget...this is a story about life after war.
