Great Conversations: Chris Matthews and E.J. Dionne Jr.

About This Episode

Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC's Hardball, discusses his book, "Tip and the Gipper: When Politics Worked," and offers a firsthand, one-of-a-kind story of the friendship between President Reagan and Speaker of the House, Tip O'Neill. Matthews draws on his own knowledge and interviews for a lesson in how bipartisan cooperation can work.

E.J. Dionne Jr., senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and syndicated columnist for The Washington Post, joins Matthews through a personal history of a time when two great political opponents – President Ronald Reagan and Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill – served together from 1980 to 1986 for the benefit of the country. In Great Conversations, Matthews discusses his up-close view of the two political leaders’ relationship, from his role as a top aide to O’Neill.

Great Conversations showcases a diverse and fascinating array of authors and interviewers from a wide range of fields including politics, science, education, public journalism, and the arts. Interviews were taped at the Kentucky Author Forum in Louisville, Kentucky.
