Edge of the Everglades: Big Cypress National Preserve
About This Episode
Narrated by Peter Thomas, Edge of the Everglades: Big Cypress National Preserve tells the story of the massive, mysterious marshland that continues to inspire deep passions for — and bitter debate about — one of the last great wild places in the world.
On the western edge of the Everglades, beyond the sawgrass prairies of the famed River of Grass, lies the cypress-studded marshland known as the Big Cypress Swamp. The vast wet wilderness — a mosaic of marshes, cypress trees, pinelands and prairies once slated to house the world's largest jetport — now stands as a testament to compromise. In 1974, unlikely allies — conservationists and hunters — brokered a controversial deal which attempted to satisfy both environmental and recreational interests.
