Walking Under Water

About This Episode

The Badjao people are sea nomads living near Borneo. For centuries, they have lived on and from the sea. But the expanding fishing and tourism industries now make it difficult for them to survive.

Alexan, the last traditional diver on gorgeous Mabul Island, wants to teach his 10-year-old nephew, Sari, everything he knows: age-old fishing techniques, the dangers of modern temptations, and the ocean knowledge he gleaned from their ancestors. This is the beautiful story of their first fishing trip together. For young Sari, while it is an initiation into the adult world, it is also a struggle between his dream of being a fisherman and his attraction to the lures of the outside world.
