Veterans Coming Home: Women in the Military

Season 02  Episode 10

America has 165,000 women enlisted and active, and an additional 35,000 serving as officers – but our female soldiers are still fighting a battle of perception. Five shorts from the VETERANS COMING HOME project looks at women in the military.

- WIFE, MOTHER, SOLDIER (from WNPT): The story of a female vet who held the line on the battlefield while her civilian husband held the line at home.

- FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE TEAM (from KCPT): Profiles an Army veteran and recruiter who missed the close bonds of military service - then found that camaraderie in the all-female sport of roller derby.

- PEACEFULLY ORGANIC (from WPT): The difficult struggle many soldiers face in transitioning back to civilian life.

- AMERICA'S FUNNIEST VETS ARE SERIOUS ABOUT SERVICE (from WHRO): A veteran uses comedy to share her story, including the harassment she endured in the military.

- ON THE HOME FRONT: Reflecting on the career of an Army intelligence officer who received a Bronze star for her military service – a recognition that doesn’t always translate to the civilian world, especially for female veterans.

VETERANS COMING HOME is an innovative public media project exploring the lives of post-9/11 veterans, the divide between them and their communities, and the stereotypes that veterans and civilians hold about each other. Why does this divide exist? How does it affect communities across the country? And why does it matter?
